Kids playing with fire

6:50am Saturday 13th March 2010

TWO teenage boys were arrested after a fire broke out in a derelict house in Hutton.

Police went to the boarded-up house in Roundwood Avenue, at 7.50pm on Saturday, March 6, after residents reported seeing a group of youngsters near the house.

Two officers went to make sure no one was trapped inside the heavily smoke-logged property, and they were later taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Firefighters doused the small fire, which was producing a lot of smoke. Two boys were arrested at the scene and questioned by police.

A 15-year-old from Brentwood was released without charge after questioning. A 16-year old from Tilbury was given a formal reprimand for possession of controlled drugs and vagrancy.

Insp Dave Richards, from Brentwood police, said: “Derelict properties and building sites are not playgrounds for youngsters and I would urge parents to speak to their children and make sure they are not using such places.”
